He won his first major title, the 1968 US Open, as a virtual unknown, and won it again in 1971. He has also won the British Open and US PGA titles twice, and is one of only five players to have won the US Open and British Open in the same year. He played in six Ryder Cup matches and was nonplaying captain in 1985.
